Meaning of 'maṃsanna or masanna'
n A corrupted word with a sense founded on popular misapprehension. Formerly, at shraddhs &c., fleshmeat (maṃsa) was eaten and spirituous liquor (madya) drunk. These things, maṃsa & madya, were proscribed by Shankaracharya, and masa & madhu (Phaseolus radiatus and honey) were substituted. Hence arose maṃsanna a corruption, as a word, from nasanna and a perversion in sense as conveying the sense Flesh-food instead of the sense Food of phaseolus radiatus.
