Pr. gheu njanato deu njanata nahi Said descriptively of a covetous or selfish person. 2 To lay hold of; to seize, snatch, catch, grasp. 3 To get, meet with, suffer. Ex. ntethe ngelasa tara mara ghesila. 4 To admit; to receive amongst. Ex. tya manasasa jatimadhye nghetale. 5 To embrace, espouse, take (a party or side). 6 To allow, acknowledge, acquiesce in. Ex. ntya asa- nkece ṃhyane ṃsamadhana kele nte ntumhi ghetale nkaya. 7 (Used with guna) To appreciate or estimate (merit). 8 To form, conceive, entertain (doubt, suspicion, dislike). 9 To assume, affect, put on. Ex. songa ghene, nkonga ghene, ṃveda ghene. 10 To catch; to be affected with (fever, pain, fear &c.) Ex. njvara, hiṃva, dukhane, mbhaya ghene. 11 To take away, deprive of, destroy, ruin (life, character &c.) 12 To take off, cut off, remove from. Ex. ntujhe nnakakana gheina; hya bhatace ṃsende ncaracara angale nghetali mmhanaje padanara nahi. 13 To require, demand, exact, call for (time, space, power &c.) Ex. ṃhe nkama donavarse ngheila; he nganthala lakuda phodayasa phara bala ghete. 14 To take in hand; to give it to; to beat, rate, scold. Ex. mmya ntyala bhalle nghetale. 15 To make, do, perform; to act in various ways. Ex. ṃsodha ghene To make inquiry; mmapa or moja ghene To measure; ṃudi ghene To take a leap; ṃladhai ghene To give battle; ṃvada ghene To dispute, argue about; ngantha, bandha &c. ghene To tie a knot &c. 16 To get hold of, find out, procure (tidings, intelligence). Ex. mbatami-cahula- payarava-ghene. 17 To hand over; to give. Ex. nti duta ikade ghya. In this sense the use is restricted to the imperative mood. 18 To incur, contract, get; to be the subject of (ridicule, reproach, a beating). Ex. maruna-hasuna-ghasuna-nagavuna-ghene; ṃare pora dati- madhye ntudavuna ghesila. 19 To cross, go over, accomplish (a hill, a stage, a journey). Ex. dongara-ghati- majala &c.-ghene. 20 To take up, bring in, add unto, apply, use. Ex. ṃha ota arunda jhala anakhi dona hata ghe; astani adaca hoti anakhi dona angali ghe. 21 To contract (habits, tricks, ways). Ex. chanda-vyasana &c. ghene. 22 To cast, fling, bring (aspersion, accusation &c.) Ex. ṃala-aropa-tuphana-balata &c.-ghene. 23 To admit the action of; to suffer to produce the usual effect; to take. Ex. ṃole ṃlakuda aga gheta nahi; ntelakata vastra pani gheta nahi. 24 To take (as a cow, the calf). Ex. nti gaya vasaru ngheta nahi. 25 To take the life of; to destroy;--used of great dangers or evils. Ex. ṃhi nadi he ntale ṃhi vihira &c. varsanta eka manusa gheti; majha bhau bhutane nghetala. 26 ghene is taken up ad libitum after verbs; sometimes denoting that the agent is the subject of the action; sometimes supplying emphasis or particularity to the agent: but generally it is redundant and only rounds the period. Ex. ṃlavakara snana karuna ghya; po- rane ṃhata poluna ghetala; mi bhata sijavuna gheto; ṃhe ntumhi sivuna ghya; itakya brahmanasa gandha lavuna gheto ṃa- ni vati svadhina karato. ngheu ndene To suffer to undergo or be the subject of, or to do for one's self; as ṃraduna-jevuna-piuna- basuna-uthuna-dhuvuna gheu nde Let him cry, dine, drink &c. This is an idiom to be regarded. ghe mhatalya or nghe mhatalyavara (Upon saying Take! here! do! A phrase formed in allusion to the practice of hot and ignorant fellows, who rush on to do whatever they are dared to do.) Rashly, precipitately, without due deliberation. ghya Take! here! look! lo!
