n (alavala S) A cavity made around the foot of trees to receive water: or in a heap of earth or lime of which mud or mortar is to be made: or in a garden-bed or field banked around for the reception of a pompion-melon-or cucumber seed, and retention of the water given. v kara for the first clause, v ghala for the second. 2 A couple of Brinjal, Chili &c. plants, as just transplanted. 3 A sort of harrow. This is the term in astagarapranta for diphala elsewhere. 4 The mark > used in books and writings before the figures denoting measures, whether of weight or capacity; as > before the denoting figure one maund, > before that of one sher, or one payi, > before tanka: also used before the figures denoting a&ntodtod;as, pies &c.
