Meaning of 'avasthabheda'

m pl S or jivace avasthabheda The variations (varied states) of the Soul, viz. jagrada- vastha, svapnavastha, susupatyavastha Waking, dreaming, sound sleep. The first is referred to visnu and to satvaguna; the second to brahmadeva and to rajoguna; the third to siva and to namoguna; and they are termed respectively visrva, taijasa, prajna. To these three states, when the full consideration of the Soul is to be entertained, two other are added, turiya & unmani q. v. in loc.

The first is referred to विष्णु and to सत्वगुण; the second to ब्रह्मदेव and to रजोगुण; the third to शिव and to नमोगुण; and they are termed respectively विश्र्व, तैजस, प्राज्ञ. To these three states, when the full consideration of the Soul is to be entertained, two other are added, तुरीया & उन्मनी q. v. in loc.
